FAQ
Common questions about psychiatric consultations, therapy and medicines.
See a psychiatrist if emotional or behavioural difficulties have lasted more than two weeks, or are affecting your sleep, appetite, work, studies or relationships. You don't need to wait until things feel "serious enough"; getting help early usually means simpler, shorter treatment.
Common reasons people consult include constant worry or panic attacks, low mood or loss of interest, sleep problems, intrusive thoughts or repeated checking, poor concentration, mood swings, alcohol, tobacco or other substance use that feels out of control, and hearing voices or holding beliefs that others find unusual.
If you or someone you know is thinking about self-harm or suicide, seek help immediately: go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
Dr. Parth Vaishnav sees patients in person in Memnagar, Ahmedabad, and online, in English, Hindi and Gujarati.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with specialist training in psychiatry who can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medicines, order tests and provide therapy. A clinical psychologist assesses and treats through psychological therapy but does not prescribe medicines. A counsellor offers talk-based support for stress, relationships and life difficulties.
If symptoms are severe, have lasted for weeks, or affect your sleep, appetite or daily life, or if they involve panic, mood swings, substance use or unusual experiences, start with a psychiatrist, who can tell you whether you need medicines, therapy or both. Many people do best with both.
In India, psychiatrists are registered with the medical council, and clinical psychologists with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). Dr. Parth Vaishnav is a psychiatrist who also provides psychotherapy, so both can be offered in one place.
Most psychiatric medicines, including antidepressants, mood stabilisers and antipsychotics, are not addictive. They do not cause cravings or a need for ever-higher doses. Stopping them suddenly can cause temporary withdrawal-like symptoms, so they are reduced gradually under a doctor's supervision.
Some sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medicines (benzodiazepines) can cause dependence with long-term use, so they are prescribed for short periods and monitored carefully.
Most people do not need medicines for life. After a first episode of depression or anxiety, treatment usually continues for six to twelve months after you feel better and is then tapered. Some conditions, such as bipolar disorder or repeated episodes of depression, may need longer treatment; that decision is made together with your doctor.
